Middlebie was the middle Roman station between Upperby and Netherby. In 936 Aethelstan drove the Norse back over the Solway and defeated them at the Fort of Brun (called Brunanburk in Saxon) Birrens comes from old English 'Burgfiens' which means any large heap of stones (especially Roman) or a burial place. The Romans called Birrens Blatobulgium. Middlebie could also mean Middle Farm or station from the Norse Methalby. Burnswark meaning Brun's Fort from old English weac (fort or defensive work) That the minister James Currie was the father of the major biographer of Robert Burns. That Thomas Carlyle had to rewrite his book "The French Revolution" at Scotsbrig because a servant had burnt the only copy. The name Hoddom comes from Robert de Karliolo (Carlyle) One of the Normans invited by King David 1 of Scotland to take lands. He was also known as Robert de Hodelm who settled in the Hoddom area and his descendents built Hoddom Castle. |
